Applying Photonics for Biomarker Sensing

Photonics, used predominately for high speed data transmission, is now being developed for measuring biomarkers in a wearable format that previously could only be measured by invasive methods or benchtop lab equipment.

The technology is based on patterns of absorbance by the body of different wavelengths of light, differentiating different biomarkers and levels of those biomarkers in the body.

Light of multiple wavelengths is created by lasers and directed into the skin. A small portion of that light is then reflected back to photodiodes in the wearable. The pattern of absorption by wavelength is then analyzed by firmware in the wearable and resulting biomarker levels reported to the wearer.

These biomarkers include heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, core body temperature, hydration, alcohol, lactate, and glucose.

Challenges in hardware include high speed, high accuracy laser bonding, light path control and isolation, heat management, and compact size. To create these wearables, assembly and test tool capability and cost, contract manufacturing capabilities, and supply chain management all need attention.

These hardware and infrastructure challenges will be discussed.
