Evaluation of the Efficiency and Performance Benefits of Wide Bandgap Switches in AC to DC Power Supplies

Much is expected of the recent developments in gallium-nitride (GaN) and silicon-carbide (SiC) technologies for power semiconductor manufacture. Devices based on these wide bandgap (WBG) materials are closer to the “ideal transistor” that we all met in our first few weeks of Engineering school, permitting power systems designers to add almost unlimited conductivity to their designs with little need to account for troublesome parasitic reactances that plague venerable silicon IGBTs, MOSFETs and thyristors. Yet the benefits that result from using WBG devices are most often expressed in stand-alone or subjective terms, rather than as objective measurements from directly comparable systems. We need controlled experimentation and thorough analysis.

As a leader in the design and manufacture of high-efficiency, silicon-based switch mode power supply ICs, as well as the current market leader in high voltage GaN and an early user of SiC, Power Integrations is in the unique position of having a single, integrated switcher platform that incorporates all three semiconductor technologies. We use the same algorithm, similar operating frequencies, same package, same feedback and overall product intent, to convert high voltage from an EV battery or grid to low voltage suitable for sensitive electronics. This paper provides an overview of the device family and provides objective and easily comparable data showing the performance in efficiency, power delivery, robustness and heat dissipation of each switch type. This data allows us to predict the performance/cost/benefit proposition of each technology.

The paper will go on to explain the motivations for Power Integrations’ considerable investment in GaN switch technology development and in the qualification of SiC, focusing on specific market dynamics and touching on the wider societal contribution.
