Dresden, Germany — 3 September 2025
At the prestigious International Semiconductor Executive Summit Europe (I.S.E.S. EU) 2025, held in the historic city of Dresden, the John Palmour Award was presented to Edoardo Merli, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Wide Band Gap, IGBT & Modules Business Group at Nexperia.
The award is named after John Williams Palmour, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Wolfspeed, and a towering figure in the commercialization of wide band gap (WBG) semiconductor technologies. Dr. Palmour’s legacy—marked by technical brilliance, industry dedication, and community advocacy—continues to inspire leaders worldwide. The award in his name is bestowed annually by ISIG to individuals who exemplify the same trailblazing spirit and transformative contributions to the semiconductor industry.
This year’s recipient, Edoardo “Dodo” Merli, stands as a shining example.
With more than 30 years of executive leadership across automotive, industrial, and consumer semiconductor markets, Merli has demonstrated not only technological foresight but also strategic tenacity. His current leadership at Nexperia involves spearheading the company’s Wide Band Gap innovation roadmap, including GaN, SiC, and IGBT technologies that are reshaping the future of power electronics.
Prior to joining Nexperia, Merli held the position of Executive Vice President and General Manager of Power Transistors at STMicroelectronics, where he was instrumental in building the company’s reputation as a global leader in power technologies. His diverse portfolio includes innovations in automotive processors, infotainment, RF communications, and the latest breakthroughs in power semiconductors—making him a rare talent whose influence spans both technical depth and commercial impact.
“Edoardo Merli’s work across the wide band gap semiconductor space embodies the forward-thinking leadership that Dr. Palmour championed throughout his life. His dedication to advancing power devices in both automotive and industrial domains makes him an extraordinary recipient of this year’s award,” said Salah Nasri, CEO of the International Semiconductor Industry Group (ISIG).
In a touching moment during the Gala Dinner at I.S.E.S. EU 2025, Merli was honored not only with the award but also with a symbolic tribute inspired by A Beautiful Mind. Attendees presented him with pens—a quiet yet powerful gesture acknowledging leadership, integrity, and impact, much like the film’s iconic scene.
Held at the elegant riverside venue in Dresden, this year’s I.S.E.S. EU brought together key stakeholders from across Europe and the global semiconductor community to engage in meaningful dialogue, explore emerging technologies, and celebrate those who lead with purpose.
As the semiconductor industry navigates new frontiers in power electronics, packaging, sustainability, and geopolitical strategy, the recognition of individuals like Edoardo Merli underscores the importance of visionary leadership in shaping the next chapter.
